How old should a child be to start quilting?

Young children can help plan and sort fabric. Hand sewing usually suits ages seven and up, always with an adult close by.

Younger than you might think, as long as each child has a job that suits their hands. Every child is different, so watch and adjust.

Little ones

Toddlers and preschoolers can sort fabric by color, choose favorites and help arrange squares on the floor. That’s real design work, and they’ll be proud of it.

Early school age

Many children around seven can learn running stitch with a blunt-ended needle and felt or large cotton squares. Keep sessions short. Stop while it’s still fun.

Older children and teens

They can cut with supervision, piece whole rows and tie or hand-quilt layers. Some will want their own small quilt from start to finish.

Keep it safe

  • Adults handle rotary cutters and hot irons
  • Count pins out and back in
  • Stay close by while needles are out
